Hiking

Hiking abounds in the Nicolet National Forest. To explore the scenic, majestic beauty, try one of the following trails - Franklin Lake, Giant Pine, Spectacle Lake/Kentuck Lake, Luna-White Deer, Seven Mile Lake, or the Sam Campbell Memorial Hiking Trail.

Cross-Country Skiing

Camp Luther, just north of Three Lakes, welcomes visitors to its extensive network of cross-country ski trails. The trails vary in difficulty, but all run near scenic lakes and through quiet forests. A map of the trails is available at the Three Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Nicolet Forest - Anvil Lake trail system offers 12 miles of groomed trails. There is a log cabin shelter where skiers can enjoy a crackling fire. Be sure to take a snack for the local flock of very tame birds; they will eat right out of your hand. Cross-country skiing is a unique way to become acquainted with the splendor of the Northwoods.

Biking

Biking is a great way to enjoy the Nicolet National Forest. Three Lakes also features the Three Eagle Trail. It is just one more way to take in the beauty of the Northwoods.

Three Eagle Trail Foundation Inc.
The Three Eagle Trail is an 8.5-mile long pedestrian pathway with a ten foot wide crushed limestone surface. It begins in Three Lakes at the Don Burnside Park , and heads north up the old Chicago & Northwestern Rail right-of-way. It follows the rail grade for about 3.5 miles, then winds its way west through a beautiful landscape of woodlands and wetlands. The terrain is level to gently rolling. The north section of the trail will take you to a very quiet and remote area so be prepared. Water, a first aid kit, insect repellant and bike repair tools are recommended. The northern end of the trail follows Sundstein Road , a quiet road that passes through the town of Lincoln on its way to Eagle River . There is a small parking area on Sundstein Road, adjacent to the trail.

The trail is an excellent way for the entire family to enjoy the Northwoods while getting some fresh air and exercise. Motor vehicles are not allowed on the trail except for snowmobilers on the southern rail grade section during snowmobile season. This is a community facility funded in part by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and by local citizens and businesses. For more information about the trail go to www.3eagletrail.com or write to the Three Eagle Trail Foundation, Inc PO Box 297, Three Lakes, WI 54562.
